Survey Says: Dwelling And Telling

02.08.2011 by Linda Lotich //

Check it out! Today we’re hearing tips and tricks from Linley at Dwelling & Telling! She’s a newlywed with some amazing hair! She’s got a video of how to do a fishtail braid for all you girls out there with long, amazing hair. Check out the video and the rest of her sassy style blog. And say hi! Comments are so much fun. 🙂

1. What is your go-to item?

Skinny jeans! I think jeans in general are a staple (for me at least), and I’ve learned that the skinny fit is what suits me best. It’s not unusual for me to wear my skinny jeans three times a week! They can be dressed up with heels, down with boots – I just love them!

2. What is your secret weapon? (Moroccan Oil? Great shoe insoles? Spanx? Give it up!)

Secret weapon: dry shampoo. Hands down. I would be lost without it. I only wash my hair two to three times a week – to keep it healthy, as everyday washing isn’t as good as you might think! Dry shampoo is my saving grace and I have about three bottles at all times! My favorite drugstore brand is Salon Grafix Invisible Dry Spray Shampoo and my favorite higher-end brand is TIGI Rockaholic Dirty Secret.

3. What is on your (realistic) wish list right now?

Well, right now I have spring on my mind and I am loving all the bold meets soft looks in different Spring 2011 Collections. So I’d like to add a few versatile dresses, skirts, and shorts to my wardrobe. Also, a pair of flat oxfords for spring.

4. How do you keep things fresh everyday?

I’ve really been trying hard not to repeat outfits (unless they’re fabulous, then they deserve to be seen more than once!). However, I definitely repeat looks. Mentioned above, I love wearing my skinnys. So one day I may wear a tank, cardigan, and boots with the jeans, then a blouse, fitted jacket, and heels another day. I’m a believer in sticking to what works best on your body – and this works for me.

5. If you could go shopping with anybody, who would it be and why?

I’d like to have Tim Gunn by my side. He knows his stuff and I think he’d really understand the style I like. From that, he could polish it up and make it something special. And a man’s perspective is always nice. Tim, where are you?

6. Who is your Fashion Icon?

Ya know, I’ve loved style for years, but I’ve never had one distinct fashion icon. I have such an eclectic style, so it’s almost impossible for me to have one icon; however, there are several ladies and lines that really speak to me. I love Zooey Deschanel, Lauren Conrad, and Olivia Palermo’s style. I also love just about all the lookbooks J Crew, Gap, and Banana Republic put out. (sorry, I’m super awful at picking just one – of anything!)

7. What’s the most important thing you’ve learned about fashion?

It’s so important to figure out what works for you (not the model in the ad) and run with it! Everyone is different (personality, body shape), trends change on a weekly basis, and it’s nearly impossible to keep up with an always-changing/evolving industry. So instead of buying what everyone else is, pick pieces that work for you and speak to you – you’ll be happier and it should be a lot easier to get dressed each morning!

8. What do you do to keep yourself fresh & looking great during travel/vacation?

Anytime I travel I always try to shower before heading off to the airport or getting in a car. Even before 6am flights, I get in the shower – and trust me, I have been on countless 6am flights – it helps! Taking a shower before getting to the airport just puts me in a great mood, and all trips should start out in a good mood! I feel clean, put together, and comfortable. As far as clothes, I don’t get dressed to the t’s for flights, but I don’t wear sweats and a t-shirt. This makes me feel great too. Also, I get some sleep before hand and drink lots of water.

I’m very loyal to my morning, night, makeup, and hair routines – so instead of packing light, I pack everything! If there’s anywhere I want to feel fabulous and comfortable, it’s when I’m away from home, so to make sure I accomplish this, I take everything with me. This may seem a bit high-maintenance, but it’s just what I do.

9. What is the best cheap/drugstore item that is totally underrated?

Mascara! I’ve only tried a couple high-end mascaras, so I can’t speak for all of them, but I’ve found some amazing mascaras for under $7 at drugstores! Some of my favorites are Maybelline Colossal Mascara and Almay Triple Effect Mascara. I’m especially loving the Almay Triple Effect right now! It’s not lumpy, it separates well, lengthens, and makes them look fabulous. When I use this stuff with some lash primer and a lash curler, it’s amazing!

10. What is the one item you should splurge on?

Can I pick two? Ok, good! These are all versatile, classic pieces. I’d love a Black Chanel Flap Bag and Black Christian Louboutin pumps. (Keep dreaming, Linley!)

Survey Says: Snappy Casual

02.01.2011 by Linda Lotich //

We’ve got some more tips for you today. This time from Kelsey at Snappy Casual! This girl is so stinkin’ cute! Plus she’s got a series on how to shop online that will change your life. Check out her thoughts, ideas, and suggestions. And go visit this gal’s blog. You’re gonna love her!

1. What is your go-to item?

My go-to item lately has been Breton stripes. Or any striped shirt, really. (I didn’t even know they were called Breton stripes until recently.) There’s just something really attractive to me about stripes. I don’t think there is any other way to be so comfortable yet still look classy.

2. What is your secret weapon? (Moroccan Oil? Great shoe insoles? Spanx? Give it up!)

Bumble & Bumble hair products. My husband jokes because one time I guess I said, “Your hair defines you.” Now, I am not shallow enough to truly believe that, but I do think hair is really important (you can only imagine how I feel on bad hair days). Hair is generally one of the first things people see and it frames your face. So I spend a lot of time on my hair every day and LOVE Bb products. I have a lot of natural texture so it just helps to bring that out. The best products for me are prep, styling lotion and surf spray.

3. What is on your (realistic) wish list right now?

Oh, my “clothing needs” and “clothing wants” lists are embarrassingly long right now. I just went through a closet cleansing and am working my way to a fully stocked closet. I have learned so much about my style since taking outfit photos every day, and as a result I’m shopping smarter now. At the top of my wish lists are nude patent closed-toe heels, oxfords, jean shorts and fake glasses. So I guess I’m ready for spring!

4. How do you keep things fresh every day?

I try to take risks and keep people interested. My goal is to look different than I did the day before–with simple things like rolling my jeans, curling my hair, straightening my hair, wearing a headband, painting my nails, wearing colors that are cleverly mismatched, tying a scarf in a new way, adding a belt, wearing two belts, sporting bright tights, wearing a bold necklace, etc. Before I started my blog, I used to repeat outfits all the time. I don’t do it as much anymore, but I will repeat the same pieces and just spice it up with rolled sleeves or a different necklace. I try to push myself to turn a shirt and jeans into a thought-out outfit by using accessories. Just be different than those around you and you will stand out.

5. If you could go shopping with anybody, who would it be and why?

Lauren Conrad. While reading her Style book I learned that she really knows her stuff. She understand fabrics and fit and how to play up certain parts of the body, and we have very similar tastes.

6. Who is your fashion icon?

I steal inspiration from everyone around me, but my first fashion icon was my nana. She is almost 80 years old and still wears red lipstick and heels every day. And don’t even get me started on her leather pants.

For celebrities, it’s Jessica Szohr. I love everything she wears. She gives off a very laid-back vibe, yet she always looks stunning. I also love Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, but I can’t relate as well to their looks or wear grunge to the office.

7. What’s the most important thing you’ve learned about fashion?

I’ve learned that there really are no rules. For some reason I think people are scared that they’ll mess up with fashion. There are certainly ways you can dress to suit your body shape, but there are no hard rules. I love black and brown together. I love a blazer and a skirt with my Converse. Wear what makes you feel good, and try not to care what other people think.

Also, I’ve learned from reading other style blogs that I don’t necessarily want to see someone in a new outfit every day. I feel much closer to a blogger if I can become familiar with the pieces in her closet and learn from how she restyles her clothes to make each outfit different.

8. What do you do to keep yourself fresh and looking great during travel/vacation?

This is a toughie! I am very low-key when I travel (leggings and flip flops in the airport for sure). I would like to make more of an effort at this, though, and go for dangle earrings with my swim suit and cover-up when we’re boating or at the beach. But I think it ultimately goes back to hair. My hair is naturally wavy, so I need to know how to style it when I’m traveling to humid weather and how to make it look great when I don’t want to spend a lot of time on it. For me the best part about being on vacation or traveling is being breezy, so I think throwing on lip gloss, sunglasses and a hat sounds perfect. Makeup-setting spray can also help keep your face together if you’re out and about.

9. What is the best cheap/drugstore item that is totally underrated?

Dry shampoo! I’ve tried a couple different brands and this year I really want to train my hair to not be washed every day. Does anyone have tips on this?

10. What is the one item you should splurge on?

I need to take my own advice here, but I think investing in a quality hair straightener, dryer and curling iron makes a lot of sense. I think I could get ready a lot quicker in the morning if I had those (wink wink to my carpool buddy, aka my husband).

Survey Says: Merci Blah Blah

01.18.2011 by Linda Lotich //

Today’s Survey Says is from Shannon at Merci Blah Blah. She’s a pretty fun gal. I hope to one day meet up with her and let her dress me. I noticed we had a few of the same answers. It really is true that great minds think alike! 😉

Survey Says Merci Blah Blah

1. What is your go-to item?

It’s not an item, but rather, a color – grey. I cannot stop buying things in this color, and am constantly drawn to it. Grey sweaters, slouchy tanks, dolman sleeve shirts…you can pair it with anything and it works. However, I have had to start asking myself when I immediately pick something up at the store – do I REALLLLLY need another grey shirt/top/sweatshirt/sweater?????

2. What is your secret weapon? (Moroccan Oil? Great shoe insoles? Spanx? Give it up!)

I have a couple: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion and Moroccan Oil. Love them BOTH, and I go through TONS of the Primer Potion.

3. What is on your (realistic) wish list right now?

Jeez – what ISN’T is more likely. I would love to have a couple of the YSL Arty Oval rings (one in blue and one in coral), and I’m forever on the lookout for a gorgeous kimono or haori jacket to wear, preferably vintage, though I wouldn’t kick the right brand new one out of bed.

4. How do you keep things fresh everyday?

Probably with accessories – great jewelry or shoes. I LOVE jewelry, and I don’t care if it’s el cheapo stuff from F21, though my preference is an insane vintage piece. I have come across a few blogs lately where the bloggers really layer on tons of pieces together, and I love that look. For me personally, more is more. I appreciate when I see people wearing really delicate chains, but what speaks to me are chunky, statement pieces that either have an ethnic feel or a 70s vibe.

5. If you could go shopping with anybody, who would it be and why?

Oh Lord – in blogland it would probably be The Glamourai, because she scores some MAJAH finds on her vintage/thrift trips. If I were shopping with a stylist, it’d HAVE to be Rachel Zoe because well, she’s Rachel Zoe. Or possibly Stacy London, because girlfriend’s wardrobe is SICK, and she would be completely honest and tell me what REALLY looked good on me. In celeb land, it would prolly be Jennifer Aniston, because I’m PRETTY sure we would end up BFF forever and ever. Jen, call me….

6. Who is your Fashion Icon?

If we are talking classic icon, then I have to go with Audrey Hepburn. Audrey was chic, elegant, graceful, effortless, and timeless. That said, there are vastly different modern icons who constantly inspire me: Nicole Richie, Gwen Stefani, and Sarah Jessica Parker are probably the top three to come to mind. All of them have pretty distinct styles, they are not afraid to try different things, and they remain true to themselves.

7. What’s the most important thing you’ve learned about fashion?

That it is possible to create amazing, completely unique looks on a budget. The bloggers who mix high and low end stuff – vintage/thrifted with designer pieces, or T.J. Maxx/Marshalls, are the ones that I can relate to most, because most of the stuff in my closet falls into those categories (except for the designer pieces…) Blogging is a dangerous hobby, because especially when doing a style blog, I am constantly browsing other style blogs and finding things I NEEEEED in my life, so it definitely enables a baaaad shopping habit. After Christmas I had a talk with myself about slowing down my shopping, or if I felt like I needed a “fix,” doing it at the thrift store. I really want to strive to find “magazine-worthy facsimilies” on thrift.

8. What do you do to keep yourself fresh & looking great during travel/vacation?

I try to pack in such a way that I can mix and match a handful of pieces into different combinations of outfits. Would The Hubs agree with this statement? Probably not. What does he know? I try to pack things that can be rolled or scrunched up and not come out too worse for the wear (jersey knits are the best). I also make sure to take lots of different options for jewelry, because it can completely change the look of an outfit.

9. What is the best cheap/drugstore item that is totally underrated?

I love the Carmindy for Sally Hanson Airbrush Foundation, and use it all the time. Howevs, I can’t find it everywhere – it seems like I have to go to CVS or Walgreens, and even then I’m not sure I’ll always find it. Jerks.

10. What is the one item you should splurge on?

A great cashmere sweater – I would love to find a grey raglan sleeve cashmere – something that looks totally casual but is really sumptuous and luxurious. Man, I am fancy – I use words like SUMPTUOUS. Don’t hate. Note to self – please see item number one above….
