Home Makeover: Closet

September 28, 2010

So Bob and I bought our first home last November. I can’t believe it’s almost been a year! Yikes! We moved in after a whirlwind destination wedding for my sister-in-law in Florida (which was freaking amazing!) and have been working on the house ever since! It’s a wonderful house and what’s so great about it are the HUGE closets! Our first apartment had one tiny coat closet, a pantry/linnen closet, and a closet for Bob and I to share. Needless to say we kept lots of things at our parents homes for quite a while. Ha ha! That’s cool. We were married and out of our parents houses and that’s all that mattered. So when we went house hunting, nothing looked better than these new homes with giant closets.

I hadn’t really done anything with my closet though. It was huge, but I didn’t feel like I was using the space very well. So I asked Bob to help me and his sister (the one who got married in Florida) to help me organize it. It turned out so great and I’m happy to show you the results!

Before

Ahem, pardon the mess.

Isn’t it huge and amazing? It’s such a great closet! I’m lucky to have it, that’s for sure!

We took everything out and painted. These are my painting slippers I got when we bought the house. I wear them while I paint.

After

Now when I walk in, the first thing I see is this clean dresser and all my extras that make me feel pretty. I framed a few photos, printed off some of Garance Dore’s wonderful illustrations, hung one of my grandmother’s hankerchiefs, and turned an old cork board into a framed cork board where I can hang my necklaces! Like it?

Also, I have to ask…So many people have told me I don’t have very many clothes. Is that true or false? I always feel like I have nothing to wear, so that would explain some things…

Wow! Quite a transformation! And I have to say I am extremely jealous of the size of your closet.

I don’t know if you don’t have many clothes, but I would say from the photos that it doesn’t look like you are bursting at the seams (no pun intended—ok, maybe a little!). It’s better to have a well edited closet of items you love to wear than tons of clothes that only take up space.

Linda! It looks amazing! I’m totally inspired to organize my closet now. I can’t wait to see it in person.

Gorgeous. Love the Garance Dore’s illustration idea.
The way I see it, a well-edited closet is worth far more than a closet full of junk…

AMAZING closet!!! I’m totally jealous…I live in a tiny studio apartment where the closet is teeny-tiny! I had to add a garment rack outside my closet to hang everything but I always worry those clothes will get faded and dusty from sitting out.

What a gorgeous transformation! I love the prints you put up on the walls, and that shade of blue??–SO pretty. Great Job! excited to find your lovely blog!

I love that you made your closet its own room, too fun! Honestly you don’t have a ton of clothes, but I think it is because you don’t have to have work clothes. You actually get to have a ton of pieces you really love and that you can wear everyday. I am so jealous! Great job!

Ok, so this is really random and I know this blog post is old, but I have to comment and say (besides loving your closet), I have that same jewelry box! The purple one with the beading. My sister bought it for me. And I think I need to copy your necklace hanging idea.
